When considering a Depository Safe there are several things to keep in mind.
1.No such thing as a Fireproof Depository Safe. The drop slot cannot be fireproofed. (We get a lot of people wanting a fireproof drop safe….not invented…yet)
2.Rotary Hopper or Mailbox drop slot? Both are excellent at keeping thieves out. However, the Rotary Hopper has a slightly better reputation for strength against pry bar attacks better than the mailbox drop depository safe does. Both hold up very well against anti fishing attacks. Anti Fish baffle is used.
3.Whats an fishing attack? That’s when someone gets a coat hanger and puts a piece of tape on the end and sticks down the safe hopping to get a $100 bill stuck to the tape so they can pull it out of the depository safe. Anti Fish baffle prevents them from doing this and actually acts as “shark teeth” and grab the coat hanger and will not allow it to be taken out of the safe. Also on the large mailbox style depository safe is the drop slot is a closed compartment to keep you from looking down the depository safe. So your view is blocked…out of sight out of mind!
4.B-Rated Depository Safe? Most of the smaller depository safes are not B-Rated. Also, there are some flimsy metal depository safes on the market. As a matter of fact there is one company that sells a depository safe that is more like a gym locker with a dial on it. That will not keep out a thief. Because a B Rated Depository Safe will have a minimum of 1/2 steel plate on the door plus a drill resistant hard-plate. While the rest of the safe is made with 1/4 inch steel. If in doubt if its a B rated ask for the thickness of steel on door and body. If you still in doubt or not sure if you trust the retailer….DON’T BUY IT!!
5. Do you need a depository safewith one door or two doors? One door is most common for small businesses but a two door is becoming more popular. For this reason. The money drops into the top door and is kept in there until the owner dials open the combo. The bottom door is where the shift manager can keep extra change and cash register trays to be locked up at night time. The shift manager would not have access to the top door so its like have two safes in one.
6.Dial combination or keypad for your Depository Safe? Dial combination is slower to get into but because its mechanical it does have the ability to last years and years. The electronic keypad that runs on a 9 volt battery is the fastest to access the safe. This is a must have for restaurants and convenience stores. However, it is a 9 volt device and like all 9 volt battery operated things they just don’t last more than around 15 years max.
